THAT'S SHOREBREAK, my friends, notes from The Watt

Paddled around for about an hour or so.  Made a few attempts pulling back as the sand loomed large.  No need to walk away with my board in two pieces.  Nice night, crowded beach, empty lineup (speaks volumes don't cha think?).
Hard Landing - 6/29

Since we hit the beach on a Wednesday this week, Wixy was AWOL, so the Target Man and I decided to continue our quest for Wings equal to the task of our high standards (yeah, ok).  At my son's recommendation we dropped in on Mother's Cantina lining 26th and Coastal.  Another locals favorite with south of the border deco and reggae boomin'.  Perfect!

Mom's home cookin!
Ok, ok, ok...Opening with a couple of dos Equis, we ordered the mediums (which according to our barkeep was like everyone else's hot) and chipotle BBQs.  In my opinion...a close wing to wing match to McGees, HT however felt they were on the small side.  Both of us agreed they tasted excellent.  If not for the service (slooooow), we may have had a very close winner...maybe a 2nd flyby would prove worthy.  Still, Mother's is definitely the next best wing so far.  We shall continue to carve inroads thru the shore on our search.

                   Until next time...

STAY THIRSTY, my friends.

Gimme a Scrapple, Egg, and Cheese On Toasted Wheat...Make That 2, notes from The Watt

Saturday and Sunday I met Thom, a good friend and former surf crew member to catch up on the past year while grabbing some serious stoke during two absolutely glorious days on Maryland's Right Coast.  Saturday afternoon saw some waist high peaks at the 68th St. surf beach, a few of which we snatched up before the late afternoon SE winds and high tide blew out the surf.  Sunday morning at the Castle brought in sweet rollers a pinch smaller that made ya work a tad harder, but paid fresh dividends.

Paid up- Sunday 6/26

Sunday's true reward was the post surf breakfast...a scrapple, egg, and cheese sandwich! (on toasted whole wheat to at least make it feel healthy).  Anthony's Carryout, an OC landmark since 1954, knows how to pile it on too: 2 thick slices of scrapple, 2 large eggs, cheese melting down at every bite.  DAMN! it is good shit! (Damn...this sounds like a review).  Regardless...a killer end to an awesome surf.
Bring it!

To snake a word or 2 or 3 from Thom, we had a blast!  Til next time or next year, whichever comes first Brah.

2nd Longest Day?, notes from The Watt

2nd longest ride, 6/23
First surf of the summer.  Thursday...first day after Solstice.  A Cheeky thought to ponder: if the Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, then which day is the 2nd longest...the day before or the day after?  Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm." Movin' into the surf...lots of paddling to catch a few.  My daughter joined us.  Warm summer nights are always nice on the water.

                                                                   Warm nights, all smiles

Keepin' The Knees Clean, notes from The Watt

Grabbed a few rides Wednesday evening.  Some clean knee highs thanks to the SW offshores.  Warm (80's) gorgeous night, nice sunset, dolphins cruisin' south. Water now at 69 - made the decision that this would be the last night for a rubber suit of any kind for awhile! Breaking best at the Castle (35th st.), and the line up showed it.  Short little fun rides.
Clean knees for the guests, 6/15

Thursday was still about knee to thigh at the Holiday (Inn-66th). Slop from an incoming storm made things a bit disorganized. Still able to extract the stoke from some skiddish rights.  Landings could be in as little as a foot of salted, so ya swung out quick and saved the face plant.  Movin' up Coastal Hwy just as the first drops fell.  Into Smitty's for wings and drafts.  Another niiiiice night.

Shwing! 6/16

Just Gimme a Nut, notes from the Watt

"Hey man, guess what...I broke from my diet.  Yeah, yeah, I usually get a MacDonalds sausage biscuit in the mornin', (oh yeah they are good good!) so after work instead of the peas and rice I made those, what do ya call 'em... Eg... Egg...Eggos.  Yeah...5 of 'em... with barb-b-que sauce.  Heh."
                                                                                                    -Wix

Now that's no lie.  Really, that's what he had for breakfast Thursday morning.  Sounds like an Andrew Zimmerman episode of Bizarre Foods.  I'm just sayin'.  It's Wix all the way, no backing off.  He eats like he surfed...radical. And he describes this gourmet dish while we're eatin' wings.  Kinda obscures our whole meal.  Still devour 'em...no hesitation.
No Eggos in our beer!
Ok, ok, ok, so this week- thigh to waist diminishing to nuthin.  Southeast onshores gave us bump enough to ride though.  Went out Wednesday the 8th, and drove in on some nice rights at the 47th street buried jetty.  Thursday had dropped to knee highs... a few bigger sets maybe if I imagined hard enough, and together with a low tide left me steppin' off in about a foot of juice.  Dude, just gimme a nut, I'll take it! It is true, 2 foot or 20 foot, the stoke's what brings us back.

On a positive note, the upwelling seems to be
coming to a rest.  Bad Water Rising..in the mid 60s
and climbing. 'll take that nut too!
Crackin' a lil shell, 6/9

The Heat Is On, notes from the Watt

The shadows are on the darker side.
Behind those doors, it's a wilder ride.
                                                   -Glenn Frey

It has begun.  Swell had been in the waist to head range.  Rough but ridable.  But as the right coast heat comes on, the surface seems to flatten out.  Today for example: Surfline simply said, "Flat, with trace ankle high waves."  Nothing wild, however this past Thursday gave us some better than knee highs.  Very nice night... warm with gusting off-shores... although "the Target," Mr. Walston just about got carried away by the mayflies.
Throw me a 'lil backside

We closed the session at Kirby's on 96th.  Local atmosphere (that's a good thing), cold beer, good size wings, ok sauce... still no contender for Smitty's.  The Heat is on...the Quest goes on.
